Frequently asked questions

What days are custom cakes available?

Custom cakes are available Thurs-Sat each week.

How much notice do you need to bake my cake?

To give me enough time to plan, bake and decorate your beautiful cake I require at least 10 days notice to create a bespoke custom cake.

If you need a cake in a hurry, take a look on my online shop and you might find the perfect thing. If you’re really stuck, feel free to drop me a note and I’ll help if I can, but it’s definitely best to plan ahead.

If I find a cake I love, can you copy it?

It can really help us both if you have some inspiration images, but please remember, only that baker could create EXACTLY that cake. Every cake is individual. Your cake will be a design created by me, inspired by your images.

How much does a custom cake cost?

Every custom cake is designed, planned and costed individually. There is some general guidance on my Pricing info page, but the final cost of your cake will be determined by the size, the flavour, the decoration and whether you’d like me to deliver your cake. Custom cakes start at $250.

When should I collect my cake?

I recommend either collecting or having your cake delivered the day of your event if at all possible. If you need to store your cake overnight, you’ll need to find somewhere, flat, cool and dry to store it. During the winter months it’s fine to be kept inside at ‘normal’ room temperature. Just make sure the heat pump isn’t blasting out warm air too close by. In the warmer months, you may need to find space in the fridge. It all depends on our oh so changeable weather, so please just ask and I’ll let you know what I think on that particualr day.

Can you deliver my cake?

Yes. I deliver all across the Wellington region. Delivery cost is calculated based on distance from the Cakery. I offer delivery Thurs-Sat afternoon, and all deliveries are subject to my availability. You can also collect your cake from Plimmerton.

Can I collect my cake and where is the Cakery?

Let’s Eat Cake is at 15b Steyne Avenue, Plimmerton. I'm about a 25 minute drive from the centre of Wellington City, so while you’re out this way to collect your cake, why not grab a coffee at Cafe Oranje or Big Salami, or an ice cream from the dairy and have a stroll along the beach looking out to Mana Island and beyond to the South Island. It's worth the drive!

Can I have fondant icing on my cake?

All my cakes are filled and covered with my signature butter icing. Although I do use small amounts for fondant for small decorations, I’m primarily a butter icing caker so I don’t cover cakes in fondant.

How should I transport my cake?

I want your cake to be as perfect when it arrives at your event as when it leaves my kitchen. Don’t be scared of travelling with cake, but do be mindful of how you drive. Drive smoothly, turn slowly and avoid heavy braking!!

I will set your cake in the fridge ready to travel, but please remember it is still only held together by butter icing!

Always travel with your cake in the boot of the car, or if that’s not possible, in the passenger foot-well. Avoid travelling with your cake on the seats or on your knees as this means it will be tilted for the duration of the journey. Tilting or shaking movements may cause the butter icing to become unstable and the layers or decorations to shift. If possible, bring a dry tea towel with you, or some kitchen roll. I use both these methods to stop the box sliding around in the boot. The cake box sides will also flex in and out, so please remove any items from the area that could knock into the box.

If you don’t feel confident collecting your cake, or for whatever reason you’re not able to collect, just let me know and we can try to organise delivery.

How long will my cake last?

If your household is anything like mine, not long! BUT if you do have leftovers, they will need to be stored in an airtight container. You can keep leftovers at room temperature for up to 3 days. You can also freeze leftovers. Again, place in an airtight box. Defrost overnight if possible. Never microwave cake!!!

Can my cake be vegan/gluten free/dairy free etc?

I believe everyone should be able to enjoy cake, so I make cakes that suit all sorts of special dietary requirements. HOWEVER, all my cakes are baked and decorated in the same kitchen, so I cannot guarantee a fully allergen free environment. If you have any questions, please contact me.
